Highlights From Around the District

1/10/18

Dear FUHSD parents and families,

Over the last two years, the Fremont Union High School District (FUHSD) has been working diligently to address the issue of declining enrollment at Lynbrook High School (LHS). When enrollment projections in 2015 indicated that LHS would see a significant decline in students by the year 2020, the District formed the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) to explore possible solutions that would allow LHS to maintain its robust course offerings and extracurricular options for students.

In November 2016, the CAC presented the following recommendation to the FUHSD Board of Trustees, which was unanimously approved via Resolution No. 1617-08: Approving a Supplemental School Assignment Plan for Lynbrook High School:

1.         that all 8th Graders attending Miller Middle School and McAuliffe School who reside in the FUHSD attendance area, but not within the Lynbrook attendance area, have the option to choose to attend Lynbrook for high school; and
2.         that all 8th Graders who reside in the Hyde Middle School attendance area, as such attendance area is defined as of November 1, 2016, have the option to apply to attend Lynbrook for high school, and if there are more Hyde Middle School applicants than available slots at Lynbrook, a lottery system will be used to (randomly) select students from among the applications received.

Thus far, the Lynbrook Supplemental School Assignment Plan (LSSAP) has been successful in producing the number of intra-District transfers necessary to sustain enrollment and the comprehensive selection of courses at LHS. The members of the CAC met and reviewed the LSSAP's progress on December 19, 2017 and found that it had created no undesirable effects on LHS or any of the other four high schools in the District.

In light of this success, and because current enrollment projections indicate that the rate of enrollment decline for LHS in the next two years will continue at a rate that the LSSAP will be able to address, the CAC has made a unanimous recommendation to the Board of Trustees to extend the LSSAP for another two years, with the annual rate of transfers into LHS not to exceed 90 students per year. This means that 8th graders attending McAuliffe and Miller will be able to choose to attend LHS for their 9th grade year, and 8th graders who reside in the Hyde Middle School attendance area will be able to apply to attend LHS for their 9th grade year. This recommendation was presented to the Board of Trustees on Jan. 9, where it was unanimously approved.

As the enrollment decline is projected to affect other parts of the District and worsen after two years, the Superintendent has asked the CAC to extend its work for an additional two years to assist FUHSD in coming up with effective, community-oriented strategies and solutions to recommend to the Board of Trustees regarding the longer-term future. All CAC members voted unanimously to accept this request.

Additional specific information on the transfer application process will be mailed this month to families in the Fremont Union High School District with qualifying 8th graders to advise them of their options for the coming 2018-19 school year.

Should you have any questions about the Board of Trustees’ decision or the LSSAP transfer application process, please contact the Enrollment and Residency Office at (408) 522-2280 or via email at enrollment_residency@fuhsd.org.

Sincerely,

Polly Bove
Superintendent

Sinceamente,

Polly Bove
Superintendent
